Cheryl Welch's World of Words

I'm an addict. Words and stories are my addiction. Ever since I was a small child sitting on my mother's lap as she read aloud Curious George, Clifford and Morris the Moose, I have had a fascination with the worlds created by words. Simple little things, really, all just different arrangements of 26 letters in the alphabet. But what power they have when put in the right hands.

I suppose I should have figured out that was what I was meant to do - write - when growing up you could find me perched in an apple tree in my backyard on sunny days reading books. From Nancy Drew to Anne of Green Gables, my world was full of fascinating adventures and interesting people. I didn't discover, however, my love for writing until college. I went to Ohio Wesleyan University to become a microbiologist or epidemiologist with the CDC. I graduated a journalist with a minor in microbiology. It's a good combination for a health writer.

After a few years gaining experience at a couple of Ohio newspapers as an education and then bureau reporter, that's what I did. My beloved hubby, Eric, and I moved to Wilmington, N.C. in 2003. I work for the Star-News, a New York Time's newspaper, as a health reporter. It's a big part of who I am. It's how I identify myself. Other, less important descriptions, would be a gardener, beach comber, horseback rider, adventurer, traveler and nature-lover.

This is my way of linking people with my work as a writer and keeping in better touch with family and friends.

My Favorites

Favorite TV show: Lost, My Name is Earl, How I Met Your Mother, 24, House
Favorite movie: The Notebook, The Green Mile, Tombstone, Cinderella Man, Seabiscuit, Far and Away
Favorite book: Too many to name... but probably "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston
Favorite sports team: Steelers - in honor of my hubby's undying love for 'em
Favorite food: Strawberries

My Hobbies

I like to garden - we have a great gated courtyard at our front entrance and a half acre of flowering bulbs, plants, bushes and trees thanks to the former owner who was a member of the gardening club. Makes my life easier. I also, of course, love to write. On the weekends, you'll often find me at the beach collecting sea shells, daydreaming or building sandcastles. We also have awesome 6-foot kites we get out occasionally on nice, sunny, breezy days. We love to camp and hike. I'm all about history so going antique shopping and taking historic tours is always great.
